The harder the bitumen is, the higher the grade; according to viscosity grading (degree of fluidity). Moreover, VG Grade Bitumen can be done on original (as-supplied) asphalt binder samples (AC grading). Viscosity test (AR) is based on ancient remains of rolling thin film oven test. Before being in the process of HMA, the asphalt binder is determined by AC grading. AR system is designed to simulate the adhesion property of asphalt. To use this system, they have to pass HMA manufacturing process. So, it should be more representative of how asphalt binder behaves in HMA pavements.
VG Asphalt Application:
VG bitumen is famous for paving. It is also used for road construction and asphalt pavement. It is commonly used as the basis of hot mix asphalt, wearing courses, possesses specs and qualities especial sand. It is different from other factors. Due to the viscoelastic responses, we can make very flexible and strong structures. Of course it ia about how fast charges are uses. Geflow`s VG is petroleum grade bitumen, is produced by vacuum distillation of crude oil. It specified by methods explained in ASTM Standard D3381–09 and AASHTO M226-80 (2008). Viscosity at 60 C rated Viscosity Graded spec cover asphalt.
Viscosity Bitumen Grading:
It’s classification based on Viscosity grading (degree of fluidity). Furthermore viscosity tests control at 60°C & 135°C. It displays road surface temperature in summer. Penetration at 25°C, also retained in Specs.
I is usually used in spraying applications e.g. surface-dressing and paving in very cold climate in lieu of old 80/100 Penetration grade. Also in Bitumen Emulsion and Modified Bitumen it can be used.
VG-20 is used in cold weather and high lands for paving.
VG-30 is commonly used for paving surfaces which must withstand heavy traffic load. It also can be replaced by bitumen 60/70.
VG-40; due to its higher viscosity, it can be used in stressed areas e.g. intersections, near toll booths and truck parking lots. It can also change with old 30/40 penetration grade. This type of bitumen is used to improve the strength of asphalt.
