About Bitumen 60-70
This type of bitumen (a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a residue from petroleum distillation. It is used for road surfacing and roofing.)is classified due to its penetration. Bitumen 60-70 is prepared in bitumen production units by vacuum floor oxidation in such a way that its penetration point (kind of test to indicate the hardness of bitumen) is 60-70 bit. In complex colloidal system, derivatives containing hydrocarbons are converted to bitumen. Complex hydrocarbons and sinks make low-grade crude oil. Bitumen is difficult to extract, but it is possible at Seeps where petroleum products are leached from ground. The combination of bitumen and solid asphalt is used for pavement. Moreover, bitumen is an important fossil fuel for oil sands.
Penetration Grading:
This system developed in 1900s to characterize the register of semi-solid asphalt. Penetration grading quantifies the following asphalt concrete characteristics:
Penetration depth of a 100 g needle 25° C
Flash point temperature
Ductility at 25°C.
Solubility in trichloroethylene
Thin film oven test (effects of short-term aging that occurs during mixing with hot aggregate)
Retained penetration
Ductility at 25° C.
Less adhesion to asphalt = deeper needle will penetrate
According to research, the performance of asphalt adhesive affects the penetration depth. Also high penetration asphalt binders “soft” used for cold atmosphere and low penetration asphalt binders “hard” used for warm atmosphere.
Bitumen 60-70 Softening point and penetration:
Penetration grade bitumen which is provided by Geflow is obtained by passing hot air through the vacuum bottom. Also Penetration grade bitumen 60-70 has penetration between 60~70 desi-millimeter also softening point between 48 ~ 52C. It is made from remain of crude oil after cracking and removing hydrocarbon. Bitumen 60/70, like synthetic resin, has thermoplastic properties which gets softer with heating and hardens when cooled. This grade of bitumen 60/70 has very strong viscosity compare to other grades.

85% of bitumen used in asphalt industry.
It is used in roofing due to its waterproofness. (10%)
5% is effective as insulation in building material.
Moreover, it uses in soundproofing, explosives, fence post coating, mildew protection, a binder in briquettes, a backing to mirrors, shoe soles and soil stabilization.
The exact chemical composition of bitumen 60/70 is related to the chemical complexity of original crude oil also manufacturing process. Penetration bitumen grade 60/70 has properties of 60~70 desi-millimeter and softening point 46~58 Deg.C.
